The didactic model proposed in the courses of Milano Fashion Institute is innovative: not only in-class lectures, but also case studies and best practices, project works and laboratory activities.
Teaching Model
The educational model is composed as follows:
- Theoretical lessons in the classroom
- Project and Prototyping Workshops
Traditional in classroom lectures are alternated with case discussions, meetings with professionals of the sector, classroom exercise activities and design workshops.
At the end of the course a MFI certificate is delivered to each student.
Courses
The course is structured in 5 modules:
Module 1: Jewellery Today
The module introduces to the jewellery sector, starting from the contexts, values and meanings, to continue with an in-depth analysis of the jewellery industry, materials and technologies, to the jewel in the digital environment and new trends. The course consists of an important series of study tours and also provides the theoretical basis for the development of creative projects in the field of jewellery, from the ideation and concept phase to the prototyping phase.
Contexts, values and meanings
The class analyzes the complexity of contemporary jewellery, the changeability of jewels, its meanings, contexts and different meanings of preciousness
The goldsmith chain
The jewellery in the jewellery system, understood as the result of the different components of the supply chain, which define its formal, performance and emotional characteristics.
Materials and technologies between tradition and the future
The class deals with the ancient materials and technologies that are flanked by new technologies and new futuristic materials that require new knowledge and new tools but also interdisciplinary knowledge and transversal methodologies.
The jewellery in the digital
New digital technologies are defining new jewelry scenarios, both for the product and for consumption scenarios and manufacturing processes. The lesson presents the future of the jewellery and its next challenges.
Luxury and Made in Italy
The module is dedicated to the analysis of the luxury and made in Italy sector through best practice case studies. In particular, the course's contribution is to describe the evolution of the concept of luxury in its historical evolution up to contemporaneity.
From Vintage to new Trends
The aim of the module is to promote the learning of useful knowledge to understand the affirmation of trends, intended not as stylistic trends, but as research guidelines.
Study Tour
Milan is one of the international barycentres of fashion and design, the study tour will bring students to the stores of the most interesting jewelry brands, for a closer look on stories of excellence.
Designing Jewellery
Designing Jewellery aims to provide the theoretical basis for the development of creative projects in the field of jewellery, from the concept and concept phase to the prototyping phase.
Module 2: Design Workshop
How to design a jewellery
The students, thanks to the support of professionals of the field, will be able to try their hand at the different phases of the design process of a jewellery and the development of a collection starting from a project brief, from the research phase and the development of concept to prototyping.
Module 3: Management
Marketing, Branding, Retail and Merchandising
Today the goldsmith market is extremely fragmented and the consumer struggles to orient himself. The module defines the jewellery market, its brands and product positioning in the international scenario. Specifically, the course aims to provide students with basic knowledge of marketing, merchandising, retail, branding and storytelling strategies.
Module 4:
Entrepreneurship and Start Up
The entrepreneurship course aims to provide basic knowledge for the development of a business plan and a start up in the jewelry industry.
Module 5:
Digital Communication
The course is dedicated to the theoretical deepening of the role of communication and digital for the goldsmith sector, investigates the role of media, advertising in the jewelry sector and concludes with a project for the promotion of its own start-up.
